Silver for Rebecca Cuckoo at the Irish Judo Intervarsity

Apart from Rebecca Cuckoo who is a 1st Dan Black belt, Ulster University was represented at this year’s Irish Judo Intervarsity by an enthusiastic group of young students who are relatively new to the sport. Despite being somewhat out graded the 5 man team fought well, but were defeated in the first round by the University College Cork (UCC) “A” Team who were the eventual Gold medallists. In the second round Ulster University had a win against the UCC “B” Team, but missed out on the Bronze medal in the next round which put in a creditable fourth place!

In the individual events the Club had better results. Rebecca Cuckoo performed well and managed to win silver medals in both her weight category and in the Women’s Open event. Unfortunately Rebecca narrowly lost to a heavier player from Cork in the final who she actually defeated in the recent All Ireland Championships in Dublin! Overall the players gained essential experience through a good number of contests where they showed a steady improvement as the day progressed. One player, Joe McKinney had 14 hard contests and displayed an impressive level of fitness throughout. As most of those competing will still be eligible for next year’s Intervarsity we can expect even better results in 2019.
