Second Place for Ulster University at BUCS Championships
On Tuesday 5th April, three of our Ulster University Golf Scholars set off for Crail Country Club, 10 miles from St. Andrews, to play in the British University finals. Ross Dutton, Neil McKinstry and Mark Morrissey were the three selected to play. Tuesday was just a practice day with 18 holes to be played on Wednesday, 36 holes on Thursday, and a final 18 holes on the Friday.
Day 1 brought difficult conditions with strong winds and occasional heavy showers but the Ulster lads coped well carding three very respectable scores. Ross 71 (-1), Mark 71 (-1) and Neil 73 (+1) which left us 2nd, 3rd and 5th respectively. Day 2 was a brighter day with the odd heavy shower in the afternoon. The scores were as follows: Ross 73, 75. Mark 72, 80. Neil 74, 80. This left us with some work to do yet all 3 boys putting on a good performance against the best college golfers in Britain.
Day 3 was a perfect day with very little wind or rain. Ross shot a low score of the day 69, Mark carded a 73 and Neil also shot a very impressive 70. This meant that the final standings were: Ross 5th, Mark 10th and Neil 11th. As a team, Ulster University came 2nd behind Stirling University.
This was a very promising week for our three scholars and something to build on very a busy season of individual championships ahead.
