Netball Intervarsity 2015

Irish Netball Intervarsity’s Weekend for Ulster University

Ulster University’s ladies netball team are getting ready to compete in The 2015 Irish Netball Intervarsity’s.
The tournament takes place this weekend, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of February. This year the tournament will be held at UCD Sports centre, Dublin. The tournament includes various teams from the north and south of Ireland.
Last year the Ulster University ladies reached the final of the Intervarsity’s but were narrowly beaten by one goal in extra time by UCD.

The Ulster University team is coached by Teresa Gillespie, who was also the assistant coach to the Northern Ireland netball team at the Commonwealth games. Teresa believes that last year’s defeat has made the ladies even more eager to win this year. “The girls are much more determined this year as they came so close to beating UCD in the finals last year. They know what it is like to lose; now they are in the mood to win, and not just win but win bigger and better.” Said Teresa.

Ulster University’s team held trials for those interested in playing netball for the university. The coaches then selected the top twelve players to represent the university in the upcoming Intervarsity’s.  “The trails went very well. The selectors needed to see the girls a number of times before making the final decision on the 12 chosen players.” Said Teresa. This year the team consists of girls from all three Ulster University campuses, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee.

The competition takes place over a period of two days ending with the final being played on Saturday. The Ulster University ladies face a test of fitness during the two day tournament with multiple games to be played.  “The biggest challenge for the players will be to stay injury free and be fit enough for every game. The challenge for both management and the players is to have the seven players who can outwit and play better than the other teams and bring the title back to Ulster University.” Said Coach Teresa Gillespie.

As the ladies set off for the Irish Netball Intervarsity’s 2015, there is no doubt that they will do Ulster University proud. Good luck to all members of the team and management.
