Jerry Murray Notre Dame Invitational
Ulster University Golf Club attend Jerry Murray Notre Dame Invitational at Waterville Golf Club
On the 20th October, five of our golf scholars set off on their seven hour trip to play in the Jerry Murray Notre Dame Invitational at the prestigious Waterville Golf Club in Co. Kerry. This was an inaugural championship contested by 3 Irish colleges (Ulster University, Maynooth University and UCD) and 3 American colleges (Notre Dame, Texas A&M and UNC Wilmington). The team consisted of Ryan Gribben, Ross Dutton, Neil McKinstry, Mark Morrissey and Stefan Greenberg. The first stop was at Carton House where we spent a day practicing and working with the university coach Johnny Foster to fine tune our game before the start of the championship.
Wednesday was the official practice day before the 54 hole tournament proper began on Thursday morning. Both Wednesday and Thursday were beautiful days with no rain and a very light breeze. The scores from day 1 were: Ryan Gribben 72, Neil McKinstry 74, Ross Dutton 76, Mark Morrissey 78 and Stefan Greenberg 82. This left Ulster University in 4th place, 11 shots behind Maynooth University who set a very impressive early pace.
Friday, on the other hand, was not such a pleasant day. There were high winds and torrential rain all day which made playing conditions as good as impossible. We did well to keep the scores at a respectable level but a superb 72 from Maynooth’s James Sugrue all but secured the title for the Dubliners. Our Friday scores were: Neil McKinstry 80, Ross Dutton 81, Mark Morrissey 81, Ryan Gribben 83 and Stefan Greenberg 83. This left us 12 shots behind Maynooth and still in 4th place heading into the final round on Saturday.
Saturday was another pleasant day with some slightly more challenging winds. As Waterville is on the coast, the conditions very much dictate how difficult the golf will be but we had another decent day recording scores of : Mark Morrissey 74, Ross Dutton 76, Neil McKinstry 77, Stefan Greenberg 82 and Ryan Gribben 83.
This left Ulster University in a respectable 4th place. Our individual results were:
Neil McKinstry- T7th, Ross Dutton and Mark Morrissey T12th, Ryan Gribben T21st and Stefan Greenberg 35th.
It was a very enjoyable championship and we look forward to competing in it again next year. We would also like to pass on our congratulations to Maynooth University on their very impressive and convincing victory.
