Irish Tennis Intervarsity Bowl Champions
This year the Tennis Intervarsity was held in Galway from Wednesday 18th to Sunday 23rd February and for the first time in many years, Ulster University featured in the draw. Matches were best of 3 sets consisting of both Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles. As a team of students from both Coleraine and Jordanstown, we were entered into the Bowl Event and drawn against the Number 2 seeds, UCC, in the first round. However, with great tennis being played by all members of the team, Ulster University came through this particular contest with a 5-0 win. After a lot of travelling and our Quarter Final match, we had a well deserved day of rest on Friday. The Semi Final began at 8:30am on Saturday morning in which Ulster University won 5-1 against UCD with some closely contested matches. The Final of the event took place on Sunday at 12pm against the Number 1 seeds, DCU. In a similar fashion, they had come through the top half of the draw as convincingly as us. After the three doubles matches, we led 3-0 and went into the singles matches with confidence but knowing it was not over. This was the toughest match up of the weekend but Ulster University prevailed with another 5-1 victory! Thanks to the team for their commitment and great play throughout the week, hopefully we will be back next year to defend our title!
