Intervarsity Success for Judo

Ulster University hosted the All Ireland Judo Intervarsity and succeeded in winning 12 medals. Below is a full report on the All Ireland University Judo Championships by Coach, Dr Richard Briggs.

The 2016 Judo Intervarsity was held in the new Foyle Arena in Londonderry on Saturday 20th February. A combined squad of Ulster University players succeed in winning 5 Gold, 7 Silver and 1 Bronze medals. This included coming a very close second in the Women’s Team event. The team comprised of Rebecca Cuckoo, Rachel Huey and Aimee McIlhatton.

In the Individual events Black Belt Rebecca Cuckoo excelled by winning gold in her weight category and a silver in the Open weight event. The only contest Rebecca lost all day was in a closely fought final of the Open category in addition to gaining points for her 2nd Dan. Aimee McIlhatton also had an excellent day in the individual events by winning the brown belt event and coming second in the under 52kg category. She also completed the point’s requirement for her black belt 1st Dan. Rachel Huey took silver in both the greenbelt event and under 57kg competition.

The men’s squad did well in the Novice events with Chris Kelly winning gold and Alan Downey bronze medals while Jonathan Moyna took gold in the yellow belt competition. James McCafferty won gold in the brown belt and silver at under 73kg. Overall out of 10 colleges taking part the Ulster University squad ranked second in the medal table.
